Pumpkins Take 2!

So, don't get me wrong...I LOVED those modge podged pumpkins just as much as the next gal, BUT, I thought that I might be able to do them a little better, or at least more my style. For those of you who know me well, you know that I love anything ornate or antique. So, our house is as shabby chic as our wallets allow :) Thus, I decided to choose some fabrics, as opposed to napkins, that fit in with the style of our place a little better. That way I was still promoting fall with the pumpkins, but choosing a style that could be displayed for a couple of months and not stick out like a sore thumb! Also, the fabrics worked much better than the napkins with the contours of the pumpkin. Check out the photos!

Happy Birthday!

It's my lovely grad assistant, Cara's, birthday tomorrow and I wanted to get her a little something. So instead, I decided to make her a little something ;) Now remember people, I am new to this whole crafting thing, but I am LOVING it! And I'm not sure that anything else matters when you get a gift from a friend other than the fact that they put time and effort into picking it out for you. I don't know about you guys, but no matter what it looks like in the end, when someone takes the intentionality to make me something from scratch, I am so overwhelmed with gratitude. Something about that gesture feels so sincere and personal. Thus, my effort to make more things for the ones I love.

So, I am hoping that Cara carries the same sentimentality that I do. For otherwise, she will see a necklace with several flaws, when I'm hoping she sees a necklace with lots of character and built with lots of love :)

Decopage a Pumpkin and You're Guaranteed to Have a Good Time!

Another fun project with Shelly! We took some fun fall prints (napkins), grabbed some fake pumpkins from Michaels, and modge podged those bad boys! My only suggestion, based on time, we only painted the stems of the pumpkins white, but I would suggest you spray paint the entire pumpkin white, unless you prefer the orange to seep through the print :)

Fabric Flowers

My good friend Shelly taught me how to make fabric flowers for an upcoming Women's Week Dessert we're having at CBU, and I kind of went a little crazy! I feel like one of those supposed artsy people who always aspires to be artsy, but never follows through. So, hopefully this is the start of something good :) Check out my "attempts" and let me know if you want to craft with me!

For the Love of Fall!

If I say a little prayer will the heat go away?

So, Fall is supposed to be the season of changing leaves, crisp weather, gluten free pumpkin scones, and apple cider. So, I ask you...what's with the 110 degree weather and my unbearable cold? Now, I know a cold is a cold and we unfortunately get them year round, but there is nothing worse than a scratchy throat and sniffly nose when it's hot and stuffy outside. And no matter what I do, I can't make this heat go away! I've tried wearing the sweater and jeans regardless of the temp, in hopes that God will adapt the weather to my needs, but no no no. So, I press on. In the heat.

Fern Gully

Ok, who remembers the Disney movie from the nineties, 'Fern Gully?' If your memory is failing you, please watch this trailer to be reminded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsIzcyYcuR4

Now, I don't know about you other children of the 80s, but I remember watching this movie and trembling in fear afterward. They show you a beautiful rain forest, where creature and human are friend, and fairies really do exist. I mean, I am loving any movie that encourages the existence of fairies! To the point Paula. Only after they lure you in with the beautiful scenery, they come and chop down the forest tree by tree. I. Was. Traumatized.

My parents told me it was just a movie and movies aren't real. Well guess what...I am living Fern Gully right now. I know this isn't much of a blog entry, but I needed to share with everyone the devastation that is occurring right outside my office! Biola is building our new Talbot, our School of Theology, and in the process, several trees are being cut down. (See picture.) As I type this, I can see trees falling to the ground in the reflection of my computer screen. I can hear the cries of baby birds and insects as their homes are destroyed, and the sound of Vanessa Williams voice asking the tree cutter downers how high the sycamore will grow, and if they cut it down, they'll never know.

Anyway. They're just trees, right? More will be planted. I know I am supposed to believe that, but the average oak tree takes 10-15 years to grow. It just makes me sad. It makes me sad people! Do you care about the trees or am I dramatic?

Let's Try This Again...Only This Time Gluten Free

It's been a long road, but after many doctor's appointments and a new clinical nutritionist, whom we love, we finally found out that I have an allergy to gluten. So, we are on a new journey to learn how to live gluten free! We've already learned a few things:

1. Gluten free items can be really yummy :)
2. Gluten free products cost double the price and come with half the amount of food :(
3. Several restaurants have gluten free menu items, in fact, BJs has gluten free pizza!

I'm excited to try a new way of living! We've only begun to search through the various websites and cookbooks for gluten free recipes, and I already feel so encouraged :)

Get ready for some tasty recipes to be posted...

I Guess We're Going to Do This...

Hello Friends & Family!
If you're reading this, I am sure you are one of many people I've told in the last year that I really want to start a blog. So, I guess it's a good thing that we're finally doing it! With a new hubby, new church, and the same old awkward and funny happenings in life, there's plenty to blog about and share with family and friends. So, sit back, and get ready for the ride of your life (insert cough), compliments of the Sherman's ;)
